Hello again!
I'm referring to this guinea pig and previous case for this post (see pic). PS. This is my own guinea pig at home and his name is Knut
So many things have been tried out now, and still this bacteria (klebsiella pneumoniae) keeps coming back (or it just never leaves).
Terramycin-Polymyxin B ointment for his eye and Bactrim (Sulfametoksazol, Trimetoprim) systemically has now been tried out in varies ways; one treatment, with both the ointment AB and the mixture AB, was for 10 whole days. The symptoms seem to clear out and then they always come back within a week or two. NaCl has been used frequently to rinse his eye, his vitamin C intake is through the roof. I've kept him warm and clean, and well hydrated, as suggested by some of you previously.
He's been tested twice to see if the same bacteria is present before ending the AB treatment, and it's still VERY prominent.
He's gained a bit of weight these past few months and will not loose it no matter what. He's at 1159g now. I've read about this bacterial infection and one of the symptoms is said to be anorexia, but this is not the case with him.
He has no other symptoms; he eats very well, he's active, popcorns and does his zoomies around the cage.
I've spoken to someone with a rooster with the same bacteria in his eyes. He was treated with Baytril Vet AB (Enrofloksacin) for 5 days and the infection went away completely. It's been about 3-4 months now, and the rooster is still fine.
Knut's right eye shows the same symptoms as before: A purulent secretion every day and he's quite swollen and red around the eye (see pic). He also has some nasal discharge.
It's been almost 4 months since the last AB treatment.
Please, does anyone have any suggestions? Should I try Baytril?
