Hi!
I had a patient yesterday that I was hoping I could get some help with. Female intact rat approximately 8 months old. Has had pruritus with skin lesions for at least 6 months, mainly concentrated around the head, neck and upper back area. Was prescribed selamectin by a different vet in November, didn’t help. The owners have tried bathing her with Allerderm shampoo and using Dermacool spray, didn’t help either. They have tried changing substrate a few times, at the moment they are using Ecocorn. They have also tried different types of food, at the moment they are using a brand called Special One. She also eats apple, avocado, carrot and salad sometimes. Nothing changes with different substrate or food. She is the only pet in the house, and she has never been in contact with other animals. Tried to do a skin scrape today to look in the microscope, couldn’t see any signs of parasites. Can rats be allergic, and if so, what is the best way to manage it? Or do you have any other ideas?
